Advising & Program Requirements
The Department strives to provide financial assistance to all graduate students admitted to the program. During the school year, this support is usually either through teaching or research assistantships. During the summer, support can be through a research assistantship or an internship.
The most common assistance package, a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) provides:
The GTA usually involves teaching several laboratories sections Principles of Geology, a general education introductory geology course. Other forms of Graduate Assistantships may also be available.
Research assistantships are subject to funding supplied by an external grant source and are arranged through individual faculty members. A monthly stipend and tuition waiver are also included in a research assistantship.
Internships involve short term employment, generally with an entity outside of Illinois State University. Examples include a governmental agency or an environmental consulting firm. A salary is paid by the entity, but there is no tuition waiver. The activities that you are involved in during an internship may be (but not necessarily) related to your thesis research.
